When Matt's father was murdered in a senseless act of violence, grief, depression, and alcohol addiction changed the course of his life. Recovery gave him a way forward—and a way to help others find theirs.

After his father was murdered, Matt's world shattered. What followed was years of grief, severe depression, and a struggle with alcohol. He began to heal when he stopped asking how to erase the pain and started asking what he could build from it.
Forgiveness and service became part of that answer. By showing up for people facing hoarding disorder, property decline, addiction, and disconnection, Matt found healing alongside the people he served.
Today, his approach starts with a person—not a label. Lived experience can become practical hope when it is paired with support, dignity, and a next step.

When Matthew Ryan Williams lost his father in a senseless act of violence, the world as he knew it shattered. What followed was a spiral into addiction, grief, and disconnection—until he began to ask a new question: What if the pain wasn’t the end of the story?
Purpose Through Pain is a memoir about trauma, recovery, and the hard-won journey toward forgiveness—not only of others, but of self. From helping people affected by hoarding disorder to clearing blighted properties and helping people reclaim their homes and lives, Matt found healing alongside the people he served.
This isn’t a story about fixing everything. It’s about finding light in broken places and learning that sometimes healing begins when we reach out a hand to help lift someone else.

Long before the microphone had a message, it had a melody.
Music has been part of Matt's story from the beginning—a way to connect, create, and make room for what words alone cannot carry.
From early jazz and school-band years to professional work across rock, blues, funk, and experimental music, music taught Matt to listen, adapt, and contribute something of his own.

When regular performing paused in 2020, music found another way back. For Fight the Blight fundraisers, Matt uses a looper and built-in drum rhythms to move from one recognizable bass line into the next.
It is part concert, part endurance challenge, and entirely about raising support for the work that matters.
